WHAT IS BRAINSPOTTING?

Brainspotting (BSP) is a cutting-edge, brain-body-based therapeutic approach designed to help you process unresolved trauma, emotional pain, and stress that may be stored deep within your subconscious. Developed by Dr. David Grand, this innovative method taps into the brain’s natural ability to heal by accessing and processing traumatic memories and emotional blockages.

During a Brainspotting session, I will guide you in identifying specific eye positions—called "brainspots"—that correspond to areas in your brain where trauma or distress is stored. Through focused mindfulness, we will work together to unlock and release emotional and physical tension. Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting allows the client and therapist to bypass the thinking brain and access the deeper, unconscious parts of the brain where healing can truly take place.

HOW DOES BRAINSPOTTING WORK?

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM BRAINSPOTTING?

Brainspotting is effective for individuals dealing with:

  • Trauma or PTSD

  • Anxiety and panic disorders

  • Depression

  • Chronic pain or physical symptoms linked to emotional stress

  • Performance anxiety (e.g., athletes, performers, professionals)

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship difficulties

It can also be used as an enhancement to other therapeutic modalities, accelerating progress and deepening emotional healing. Therefore, clients who are working with another mental health provider can consult with me on a short-term basis for brainspotting, so long as their primary clinician is aware and the client has signed a release form so that I can discuss progress and treatment planning with them to attain optimal results.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Sessions are client-focused and attuned to your unique needs. As we work together, I will help create a safe, compassionate space where you can explore difficult emotions at your own pace. Brainspotting is a gentle but powerful tool that respects your body’s innate wisdom, allowing healing to unfold naturally.

Whether you’re experiencing deep trauma or seeking to overcome everyday stress, Brainspotting can be a transformative tool for lasting emotional wellness.

What to Bring and Prepare for a Brainspotting Session

Comfortable and Quiet Space
It’s important to be in a private, calm environment where you feel safe and relaxed. This space should be free of distractions so you can focus fully on the session.

Headphones (for virtual sessions)
Basic headphones (NOT noise-canceling) are recommended so that you can hear the bilateral music (described below) and to help with focus and auditory tracking.

Music

We will use bilateral sound (music that alternates between the left and right ears), which can deepen the processing experience. A Brainspotting “BioLateral” audio track, downloaded or otherwise prepared on the  device being used for the Brainspotting. These can be found on the apple store,  the BioLateral sound website, Spotify and YouTube, among other outlets (note: if  you don’t have a subscription to these platforms, your music may be interrupted by  an ad).

Device with a Reliable Internet Connection
Make sure you have a stable internet connection and a device that allows for clear video and audio communication, such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone.  Ideally, you will have 2 devices, such as a phone for the music and a laptop to join the virtual telehealth session.

Willingness to Be Present
Brainspotting works best when clients are open to being present in their body and emotions. You don’t need to prepare mentally like you would for traditional talk therapy, but being willing to explore whatever comes up during the session is key.

Water or a Light Snack
Emotional processing can be intense, so having water nearby and staying hydrated is helpful. You may also want to have a light snack on hand in case you need to ground yourself after the session.

Comfortable Clothing
Wearing loose, comfortable clothing helps you relax during the session and focus on the process without any physical discomfort or distractions.
